Commentary: Malaysia’s mid-week polling day may impact voter turnout in Johor, Kelantan and East Malaysia
The worry for politicians facing the ruling BN coalition is that the voters most affected are “outstation voters”. They work in bigger urban areas including the Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, Penang and Singapore, and they tend to be opposition supporters.
The BN wants to discourage urban outstation voters from going back to vote in their usually more rural home seats and cause an electoral upset in their rural stronghold. These voters need to travel some distance intra or inter-state or further including from Peninsular to East Malaysia to return home to vote.

In summary, it is surprisingly hard to lay the blame on Singapore visitors. First of all, the data is surprisingly scant and inconsistent. Significantly, there are various forces at play, including the arrival of other groups of well-heeled investors. Singapore’s prominence as Johor property buyers seems to be eclipsed by those from China. WITH SPECIAL DATA FEATURE: JOHOR HOME AFFORDABILITY BY DISTRICT, JOHOR-SINGAPORE PEOPLE FLOWS.
Systems informed by big data can offer compelling evidence for the smallholders. For instance, Malaysia could easily point EU policymakers and buyers to smallholder zones that have been in production (no deforestation) since 2000, 1985, 1970 and so on. For every 300,000ha of smallholder plantations found, buyer could get over one million tonnes of no-deforestation palm oil.
